Baby Bean is due on July 12, 2008. This is the detailed timeline of his/her first 9-month existence. Medical history and events included. This page will be updated frequently throughout the pregnancy.

  • October 1, 2007:
First day of the last menstrual period. This is according to the pregnancy calendar. My real first day of my last menstrual period was September 15, 2007. I just got off the pill and the next day my period started. I didn’t get my period since.
  • October 18, 2007:
    The speculated date of conception.
  • October 29, 2007:
Dave got me a pregnancy test for my birthday and I took it. It was negative. We were very disappointed.
  • November 6, 2007:
I bought a pack of three pregnancy tests. Took one at approximately 6:30pm, and it was positive!! We jumped for joy!!
  • November 7, 2007:
Went to my doctor’s office, took another clinic-based pregnancy test, and it was also positive. Went home, and took the second pregnancy test from my own pack, and it was again positive. We”re definitely pregnant. I wasn’t just dreaming.
  • November 10, 2007:
I had a series of blood work done at the lab in White Rock, BC (where we live), to try and determine when the exact due date is since my menstrual cycle was so abnormal. Ultrasound scheduled for Bellingham, WA, on December 3, 2007.
  • November 16, 2007:
I’ve been sick for a few days now and it was getting worse. I went to my doctor again and she prescribed a dose of mild antibiotics that would be safe for the baby. I took amoxicillin for 7 days, twice a day. We went on our honeymoon from November 17 to November 24, 2007, to the Yucatan, Mexico. I also heard back from our doctor about the blood work. She confirmed that there’’s no two ways about it: I’m definitely pregnant. She said the blood work said I was only approximately 4 weeks along, but told me that it’s probably more than that.
  • December 3, 2007:
Our first ultrasound to see Baby Bean. It is confirmed that indeed Bean is now 8 weeks and 2 days along today. We have a firm due date: July 12, 2008! It was a very, very emotional day for us, and we immediately shared the ultrasound with as many people as we could. Baby Bean’s first picture is now also framed and on our bookshelf at home.
  • December 14, 2007:
I went for my first, official prenatal visit with my doctor in Bellingham, and she used the doppler on my growing tum. I heard Baby Bean’s heartbeat for the first time. Bup-bup bup-bup bup-bup! It was tiny and fast. 175 beats per minute! My doctor also diagnosed with Thyroiditis, which means I have an inflamed thyroid. I took more blood tests to determine what needs to be done now.
  • December 30, 2007:
I officially entered my second trimester with flying colors. The all-day nausea stops! This was also the first and only day I ever vomited. Dave and I had our second wedding ceremony, Vietnamese-style, with my family in North Carolina.
  • January 18, 2008:
I went for my next prenatal appointment with my doctor in Bellingham, and woo! Heard the Bean’s heartbeat again for the second time! 150 beats per minute. Bean makes me so proud. All is well. Doctor said that the blood work showed that my thyroiditis is not interfering with my general health and pregnancy, and that everything looks normal. Woo! Baby Bean is now approximately 4 inches long and weighs about 3 ounces. I am 104.5 lbs. I gained 5.5 pounds since the pregnancy began.
  • February 1, 2008:
I went to get my blood test for maternal serum screening — that quad blood work thing. Will get results on my next doctor’s visit, I imagine, which is in approximately two weeks.
  • February 6, 2008:
The blood work results came back: perfectly normal and healthy! Go, Baby Bean, go!
  • February 15, 2008:
Went for another prenatal doctor’s visit. I dragged my best friend, Jenbug, with me so she can hear the baby’s heartbeat. I also called Dave during the visit so he can hear it over the phone at work. 160 beats per minute. It’s a little faster than last time but the doc says it’s perfectly normal. I’ve gained 3 more pounds in the last month, which gives me a total of 8 pounds altogether that I’ve gained since getting pregnant roughly over 4.5 months ago. Woo! We made an appointment for a sex-determination ultrasound next Friday, when I’m 19 weeks and 6 days along.
  • February 22, 2008:
Our 19 6/7th week ultrasound. We found out the sex of our Beautiful Baby Bean. Bean weighs approximately 11 lbs, and everything looked and measured normal. Bean was also doing various yoga poses (just like her Mommy!) Here’s Bean doing a yoga pose, and here’s a couple of profile shots. Of course, Bean is just as big a yoga nut as her Mommy is!
  • March 14, 2008:
My regular monthly doctor’s visit went very well. Smooth as usual. Felt Bean’s heartbeat again. It’s a whopping 145 beats per minute now. And it sounded a lot stronger. Didn’t take long to find at all!
  • April 21, 2008:
Another regular prenatal doctor’s visit with Dr. H. She said my uterus is measuring a bit small, so we’re going in for another ultrasound next Monday. Bean is still kicking up a storm everyday, at all hours of the day. Most likely it is because I’m a small preggy girl that Bean is also small. She’s got the teeny tiny genes! Got tested for gestational diabetes and had my thyroids checked. All is clear! I now weigh a whopping 120. I’ve gained 21 pounds since the pregnancy began.
  • April 28, 2008:
29th week ultrasound. Everything is healthy and proportionate. Bean is measuring smaller than the average North American standard, but that is because I’m small. Heh. She weighs ~ 2.5 lbs. Some pics: 010203
  • May 2, 2008:
Officially checked my name into the P.A. Hospital in Canada. We’re having our baby there. Met the doctor who will be delivering Bean on her debut day. I weigh 123 pounds. Bean’s heartbeat is currently 141 bpm.
  • May 10, 2008:
We went for the one-time, 8-hour prenatal childbirth class at P.A. Hospital. Learned a lot of things, got a tour of the maternity unit, even met a newborn baby and was taught how to bathe her. It was a loooong class, though, and it was on a Saturday. But overall, it was useful information and I feel a lot more relaxed about labor (or as relaxed as I could be, I guess).
  • May 19, 2008:
Another prenatal doctor’s visit, with Dr. G. I’m at 126 pounds now. I’ve gained 27 pounds since the pregnancy began. Bean’s heartbeat today is 143 bpm. She is still head down and very active!
  • May 30, 2008:
Doc’s visit with Dr. S. He explained the ultrasound (4th one) we had on the 27th. Bean is still measuring small, but is still in the normal range. She weighs approximately 4.5 pounds. Everything is measuring smaller except her legs: she has longer legs than average. How CUTE!! Her heartbeat is 142 bpm. I weigh 128 lbs now, a 29-lb gain since the pregnancy began.
  • June 10, 2008:
Saw an obstetrician in White Rock, Dr. G. She measured the baby and listened to my heartbeat. Bean is measuring at 35 centimeters — all caught up and average size now! She’s growing quickly! Her heartbeat is 132 bpm today. I weigh 132 pounds. I’ve gained 33 pounds since the pregnancy began.
  • June 13, 2008:
Regular doc visit at the hospital. Bean is measuring 34 centimeters — apparently it entirely depends on which doctor is measuring. She’s still growing exponentially, so all is well. Did my strep B swab test.
  • June 16, 2008:
36 weeks and 2 days along. I called the hospital because last night I started experiencing some really, really sore/painful pelvic pressure and aches. The maternity ward told me to come in to get an assessment. Doc checked me up, hooked me to hear Bean’s heart (I was getting Braxton Hicks contractions, but with no pain). Doc said the pain was just round ligament pains, and all is still well. This was approximately 11pm. Went back home feeling rather relieved that all is well.
  • June 20, 2008:
36 weeks and 6 days along. Regular doctor’s appointment at the hospital. Baby Bean is measuring 35 centimeters, her heart rate is 144 bpm. She’s a little calmer today. Hehe. I’m at 134 lbs, a full 35-lb weight gain since the pregnancy began. My strep B swab test came back negative. Woohoo!
  • June 27, 2008:
37 weeks and 6 days along. Regular doc’s visit. Baby Bean’s heartbeat is 146 bpm. I’m at 132 lbs today (oddly, I seemed to have lost two pounds in a week? very weird). Baby Bean’s measurement is 35 centimeters still. Her head appears to have dropped lower in my pelvic area, which means she’s getting ready for labor!!
  • July 4, 2008:
38 weeks and 6 days along. Regular doc’s visit. Baby Bean’s heartbeat is 144 bpm. I’m at 136 lbs today, which means I gained a whopping 37 lbs since the pregnancy began. Baby Bean’s measurement is 37 centimeters today. All is normal. Doc said he will order another ultrasound for me if I go past 40 weeks, as well as a stress test.
  • July 11, 2008:
39 weeks and 6 days. Went into labor at approximately 3:40a. Water broke.
  • July 12, 2008:
Baby Bean is born! At 2:03pm, she made her debut through a c-section after 21 hours of hard labor. Read the labor story to get the full details.
