The 20-Week Changes

I’m smack in the middle of week 20, and some amazing things have happened.

1. I have seriously started ballooning. People are recognizing I’m pregnant, and this cute little belly is getting bigger and bigger.

2. I have developed the ever-common belly line down the center of my belly, called the “linea nigra.” It’s very faint, but I started noticing it once I was 20 weeks along. It means my belly is stretching and the skin pigments are compensating.

3. The movements from Lily Bean have gotten stronger and more noticeable. Dave can now feel them regularly, and Jenbug has felt them several times too. I also recognize a bit of a pattern with when Bean is awake.

4. Bean looooves Alison Krauss’s lullaby song, “Baby Mine.” Every time I put it on, without fail, she wakes up and starts kicking and grooving. It’’s the coolest thing in the world. It also makes me cry like a baby. Heh.

The 20-Week Ultrasound

Hi there! Oh what wonderful wonderful news we’ve got. We went for our second ultrasound appointment yesterday, and guess what? We found out what sex Bean is! On top of that, the most important part is: Bean is incredibly healthy and normal (and as they say, “normal” is always good in medicine). Five fingers on each hand, five toes on each cute little foot. I felt Bean kick at the same time as seeing it, so that was the most awesome thing in the world. At one point, the little stinker had the hiccups, so we were able to see that too. It was SO adorable! Bean even did a yoga stance for us, showing off to the proud Mommy. The whole ultrasound took about an hour, with measurements of every bone we can find for Bean, and measurements of the head and spine and bum and heart and stuff. Everything is perfect and where it is supposed to be. We were both so overwhelmed with joy and love that we both started crying when we first saw Bean.

We won’t be announcing the sex of the baby just yet. We’d like for you to take a short questionnaire in order to find out the sex first. I’m going to be printing out all the answers and putting them in Bean’s baby book, and will be sharing it with Bean when s/he can read and talk and stuff. It will be wonderful for Bean to know just how loved s/he is even before the birth. :) So please take the questionnaire. The sex will be revealed afterwards.

Without further ado, here are some of the ultrasound photos:

The Physical Touch

This is an example of how wonderful asking for something can be. I just asked for more pronounced movements of Baby Bean. Throughout this whole last half hour, Bean has been kicking the left side of my tummy. 19 weeks and 2 days, and now Bean has finally begun to really show his/her presence to Mommy. The kicks are awesome, but they stop when Daddy (aka Dave hehe) comes and checks them out. I think Bean gets performance anxiety or something. The kicks are starting to come again now, and they’re awesome. Absolutely awesome.

Welcome to the world of physical touch, Bean.

Gaining Weight

Yesterday was my monthly prenatal appointment with my doctor in B’ham. I’ve gained 3 pounds in the last month, and 8 pounds in total since the pregnancy. Woo hoo!! I was afraid I’d lose weight, or not gain at all, but I’m glad I’m gaining, as that has always been an issue with me since I was a child.

We also got to hear Bean’s heart beat again. It is 160 beats per minute right now. Dr. H had to chase Bean around in my uterus — seems as though s/he was playing hide and seek or something with the heartbeat monitor. It was really cute. We’d hear a “whooosh” on the left side of my tummy, so Dr. H would chase it to the right side of my tummy, and then suddenly — bup-bup bup-bup bup-bup. It was awesome. The highlight of every month, I swear. And what’s more, I brought Jenbug with me so she can hear the heartbeat too, and I also called Dave on the phone at work. He heard the heartbeat for the first time over the phone. It was the most amazing thing ever. So cool.

We’ve got an ultrasound scheduled for next Friday to find out the sex of the baby. This will be very, very exciting! Everyone place your bets and let the guessing game begin! Boy or girl? Girl or boy? What do you think Bean is?

Mmmm Noodles

OMG! I believe, almost without a doubt, that I just felt Bean’s first hard “kick.” It felt like a couple of fingers flickering against my tummy. I tried having Dave feel, but by the time he got his hand against my tum, Bean had already moved on to bigger and better things, exploring the uterus and stuff like that. A second! That’s all it took – a second! So exciting.

So lately, my cravings have been:

  • honeycomb cereal with milk
  • spam and eggs with rice
  • pho noodles from Black Pearl restaurant
  • coconut and milk blend milkshake

My back is very uncomfortable at night. I can hardly get a good night’s rest. I have two body pillows on either side of me, to ensure that I don’t roll onto my back and sleep that way. I’m constantly sleeping on my sides, but those positions get tiring. So I’m guaranteed about 2 feet of width to move around (which is about as wide as I am :P ). Feels a little claustrophobic, but it’s the most comfortable I’ve been able to manage since my belly’s gotten bigger. I read that I’m not supposed to be sleeping on my back because it cuts blood circulation into the uterus, so I’m trying to be very careful. I just wish I can get a good night’’s rest too! Any ideas?
